Why Do I Have Hip Joint Pain?
As the hip is the central point for moving around, there are many opportunities for injury. Here are some of the most common injuries and ailments that the people of St. Albert contact us about:
Hamstring Injuries: The hamstring is a grouping of three muscles located in the back of the thigh and allows us to bend our knees. Problems occur when the muscles are strained or torn, leading to mild to severe pain around the knee or hip (depending on the location of the trauma). This can occur from running, kicking or walking down steps. There are three grades of injury, from mild to severe, when it comes to the hamstring. A grade one strain will feel like a mild pull or ache in the back of the thigh and can happen gradually over time. Grade two strains often occur from a specific even and sharp pain and is felt right away; this level of strain can make it very difficult to walk. The final grade happens when the muscle is torn, often resulting in a “pop” sound. The pain is intense accompanied by a great deal of swelling. Walking on the leg will often not be possible and the individual will require crutches.
Piriformis Syndrome: The piriformis is a small muscle that connects from the hip to the lower part of the spine. As it runs over the sciatic nerve, inflammation in the piriformis can cause excruciating pain in the hip and buttock.
Hip Bursitis: The bursae are pockets of liquid that help lubricate joints and facilitate movement. Bursitis is when the sacs of fluid become inflamed due to overuse, creating micro tears. Symptoms range from a dull burning pain in the outer part of the hip (Trochanteric bursitis) to pain in the upper buttock which is most obvious when climbing up stairs or an incline (Ischial bursitis).
Iliopsoas Syndrome: The iliopsoas is a muscle that helps with the lifting of the leg. The symptoms of inflammation are movement pain and a snapping or popping sensation when the muscle is contracted. It usually occurs when the muscle is overused from high-intensity workouts.
